About iPhone 12 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra & OnePlus 9 Pro Giveaway
iPhone 12 Pro Max Review
Despite being only two grams heavier than last year’s 11 Pro Max, the iPhone 12 Pro Max feels even more solid & well built. The flat edges, the matte etched glass rear and stainless steel sides are another level of elegant fit and finish. The review unit I tested was gold, and the polished sides looked like gold bar. But make no mistake, this is a big phone. If you dropped it on someone there’s a chance they’d sustain a serious injury.
Defining all this premium bigness is a 6.7 inch OLED screen, which is larger than the 6.5 inch one found on the 11 Pro Max and XS Max . The new screen makes the 12 Pro Max a sliver taller & along with those flat edges, gives the behemoth iPhone a tight robust look.
On the back of this elegant phone is a camera bump that’s thicker than an SD card. When the 12 Pro Max is on its back, there’s a noticeable gap between the phone and the surface it’s on. I realize most people are going to put a case on it, which will level things out.
Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review
The Galaxy S21 Ultra comes in a sleeker design and offers faster performance from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chip. And, unlike the regular Galaxy S21, you don’t have to make nearly as many trade-offs. You get a better main 108MP camera, a glass back (instead of plastic), more RAM, and a higher-res display.
- The dynamic display on the Galaxy S21 Ultra delivers a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and sharpest WQHD resolution at the same time. And it’s amazingly bright and colorful to boot.
- The dual telephoto lenses (3x and 10x optical zoom) get you very close to your subject, and the new Zoom Lock feature keeps things steadier with digital Space Zoom.
- The S Pen support is nice to have, but you have to purchase the stylus and a case to hold it separately.
- At $1,199, the S21 Ultra isn’t cheap, but it’s $200 less than the S20 Ultra. However, you don’t get a charger in the box or a microSD card slot.
- The larger fingerprint sensor is welcome, making the S21 Ultra easier to unlock.
- The 11.5 hours of battery life is excellent for a 5G phone.
OnePlus 9 Pro Review
The hardware design on the OnePlus 9 Pro is the most seamless, elegant phone that the company has designed to date. It is, of course, big. It has a 6.7-inch screen that goes from edge to edge in a body that’s narrow enough to make it just barely usable for me in one hand.
What I can’t help but notice is how far OnePlus has come in build quality. The glass on the front and back curves into the aluminum rail on the edges with no seams at all. It’s well-balanced, beautiful, and solid.
To be fair, OnePlus does keep some of its identity in the three-stage ringer switch, which easily lets you toggle between a ringer, vibration, and fully silent. It may still be my favorite feature on OnePlus phones, and I remain baffled as to why more Android phone makers don’t adopt a physical ringer switch.
The OnePlus 9 Pro has the top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which is paired with eight gigs of RAM on the 128GB model. Unfortunately, this configuration isn’t sold in North America — OnePlus originally expected to make it available, but later said that supply constraints led it to offer only the more expensive version with 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. There’s no microSD card slot for storage expansion in either model. What you get is what you get.
